First things first: Mom and I are fine.
Tropical Storm Lala passed through Hawaii over the weekend. We lost power for about 12 hours Sunday, but compared with the Kona storm we experienced in March, here in Kihei it mostly felt like just another wet and windy day.
Except the effects weren’t entirely local. This morning I drove a few miles to the DMV. Closed. And something appears to have disrupted the cellular network, making Internet access considerably harder once I leave the condo. We weren’t hit particularly hard. But infrastructure we’re connected to was.
Organizations work the same way. That’s why DHARMA emphasizes the interconnectedness of organizational design. A disruption in one element doesn’t stay there. It creates effects elsewhere in the system—and restoring the affected element doesn’t necessarily restore the system. When one element moves out of alignment, the entire system must be realigned.
